Let’s look at these two verses…

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Luke 12:34

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

They say that OCD attaches to the things we care about most…for example, faith and family. Interestingly, when I look at these verses, I find that the thing I’m supposed to treasure the most is the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. And you know something? While this verse (Matthew 6:33) stands out in my mind, I never realized the popular verses on worry that come after it, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow…” (Matthew 6:34). Have you ever thought that maybe OCD revolves around us caring too much about things that were supposed to come as #2? If God is first, then all these things should fall second in our lives.

I think those of us with OCD suffer from caring too much about this world. We lose sight of the One who gives us breath every day. Maybe God allows us to fret so much that OCD begins to sabotage all the things we try to hold in our hands. This earth is just temporary. For those with OCD, we make idols in our heart. Sure, they might not be wooden idols like in the ancient days or in different parts of the world. Nonetheless we have idols: control, praise from people, etc. We grab at the things of this world as if we could take them with us when we depart…and yet, they slip through our fingers like dust.

You see, we were meant for more. We were meant for another world. This sounds like pretty deep stuff, right? But if you’re suffering from OCD, what do you have left to lose? Take it from the well-known author C.S. Lewis Himself:

“If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy,

the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” ~ C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

That world is Heaven. We’re meant to seek God’s Kingdom. We weren’t made to make this place our home. After all, look at this place…just see the effects of this coronavirus, for example. We live in a fallen world. That’s not to say there are not also good things in this world, but the condition of this world is fading away. We see sin everywhere. We cry, we are depressed, people disappoint us. If we look for happiness in a place or in a person, we find ourselves still empty. It’s because we have a God-sized whole in our hearts that only Jesus can fill. It took me having OCD to come to this conclusion.

I don’t have all the answers, but I do know I have the Bible to refer to as truth. May we continue to shift our focus to things above. Instead of wanting all the blessings, may we want the Blesser.
