Yesterday, I was walking my dog in the beauty of God’s nature. It was getting later in the day, and by the time we reached a small hill, the landscape was growing significantly darker. I thought to myself that we should hurry back as the day seemed to be hurriedly escaping us.
We walked back past the hill, and I noticed something…the sun was still shining brightly. I had plenty of sunlight left! I was able to bask in the sun and enjoy the walk back. The sunlight glowed off the grass and my surroundings. It seemed like we had more time in the day for our walk. Everything was better just past the hill.
Our perspectives can change a lot about our lives actually. It’s sometimes hard to think this way. When our minds are down in the dumps, we often tend to stay there. It’s sometimes hard to break free of a negative thought pattern.
In our perfectionism, we seem to think we know it all…that we are in control. The sunlight is escaping us, and the darkness is engulfing. We take that as fact. However, if we just take a look outside of our perceived circumstances, we can see the light on the other side of our problem.
God holds solutions we would never dream were possible. Take His Son, for instance. Who would have thought that God would send His one and only Son, Jesus, to die for us on the cross? The world seemed hopeless. At the time when Jesus was in the grave, his followers were mourning. They didn’t understand that their angle—their thoughts—on the matter were skewed. That is why Jesus said, “‘You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand’” (John 13:7).
When we’re in our suffering, when we’re experiencing something that seems to wreak our lives, it’s easy to mourn in anguish and let anxiety take over. It’s easy to forget God’s promises and to feel like we are sinking. From our perspective, everything looks lost.
Our faith can move mountains though. How often this verse has been hard for me to wrap my mind around: “‘Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, “Go, throw yourself into the sea,” and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.’” Mark 11:23
Well, I know one thing, when I changed my perspective, my mountain did move. From the other side of the hill, I felt the sun.
The whole Bible is a perspective changer. It challenges us in our daily lives to look at things differently. Perhaps, from our limited perspective, we don’t understand everything. That’s okay! During a storm, you don’t see the flowers grow from the rain. It is after.
Perhaps, you find yourself trying to hold on to the pieces of your life, and they don’t quite seem to fit together. We aren’t called to understand everything but to trust the One who does. Don’t let your limited perspective wreak havoc on your life. Trust in the One who holds the whole world in His hands. His perspective is much bigger than ours.
